The .44 Special or .44 S&W Special is a smokeless powder center fire metallic cartridge developed by Smith & Wesson in 1907 as the standard chambering for their New Century revolver, introduced in 1908. Today, there are still some production runs of .44 Special chambered revolvers, but no many. Today, most 44 Special ammo is used as a lighter recoiling practice ammo option for 44 Magnum shooters because just like shooting .38 Special in a .357 Magnum revolver, 44 Special works the same in a 44 Magnum revolver.
